Everywhere you look there are squirrels. They are kind of unavoidable and can be quite the pesky critter. They are especially annoying to those that have set up a bird feeder and realize that the seed is gone very quickly without much birdwatching. Being that birdseed is one of their favorite foods, this can make it hard to have a bird feeder. Once the seed comes up missing, it is time to find a squirrel proof bird feeder.
There are many bird feeders out there with the claim of being squirrel proof. There is a good deal of money being spent on squirrel proof bird feeders. There is also a lot of money spent on bird seed that is lost to these bird feeders.
There is the dome-like bird feeder that is used to try to keep squirrels away. The seed may be held in any shape or size with the top enclose with a dome-like piece. The dome does not allow the squirrel to find any purchase along the surface so that it falls off once it lands on the bird feeder. Thus, they cannot reach the seed.
Some bird feeders have a built in weight device. When the squirrel comes upon the feeder, the device is triggered. Once triggered, the seed is closed off from the squirrel not allowing it access.
There is also the kind of bird feeder that sends the offending squirrel flying off the feeder. They allow the squirrel to slide down the actual feeder, but when they reach the bottom perch their weight causes the bottom to spin. Once the bottom starts to spin, the squirrel goes a flying.
Now, these types of bird feeders may seem like you have reached a success point. You will see the squirrels launch themselves at the bird feeder and fall off. But, if you watch closely, you will notice that each time the squirrel does this, seed falls off the feeder to land on the ground. The squirrel notices this too and soon they have enough for a meal.
